As the City of McAllen moves forward with Vision Zero, the plan it developed aimed at eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, equitable, and healthy mobility for everyone, the first improvement project will be implemented beginning next year. The traffic signal improvement project will replace traffic lights at every intersection from McColl Rd. to Bentsen Rd.
Starting Mon., Jan. 6, 2025 and continuing through the beginning of February, the contractor on record, The Levy Company, will begin improvements. The improvements will include removing and replacing small signs, signal heads and replacing them with new ones which are brighter and more visible during the day and night. Intersections will not be fully closed, but some lanes may be closed, causing delays at the intersection. Work at each intersection should take approximately one to two days, with some night work being done
Motorists are encouraged to allow additional travel time or to find alternate routes to avoid congestion in the area. A total of 13 intersections will be improved, with 151 signal heads to be replaced.
The City of McAllen Traffic Operations Department was awarded a Highway Safety Improvement (HSIP) grant from the Texas Department of Transportation for the Nolana Avenue improvement project. The grant is part of the federal initiative which focuses on achieving significant reduction of traffic fatalities and serious injuries on public roads, including non-State-owned and roads on tribal lands. Additionally, the department has submitted other grant requests using data from the Vision Zero plan to improve other intersections throughout McAllen.
