RIO GRANDE VALLEY – No. 24 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s soccer team dropped their Western Athletic Conference (WAC) home opener to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 2-1 on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
Down 1-0 in the final minute of the first half, a hand ball in the box gave the Vaqueros (5-2-0, 1-1-0 WAC) a penalty kick, and senior Kyle Edwards scored his fourth goal of the season to tie the match.
The Wolverines (5-3-1, 2-0-0) responded in the 56th minute when Blake Frischknechtscored the game-winner on a shot from the upper right-hand corner of the box off a feed by Mark Brown.
The Wolverines originally took the lead in the 15th minute on a diving header by Aaron Caprio off a pass by Zach Mass.
Senior Andy Rios (5-2-0) made three saves.
The Vaqueros and Wolverines each attempted eight shots, although the Wolverines held the edge in shots on goal, 5-1.
UTRGV is back in action on Sunday at 12 p.m. against defending WAC Champion Air Force at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Admission is free, courtesy of Entravision. Gates open at 11 a.m.
