March 4, 2014—Dr. Shirley Reed, president of South Texas College told to a packed room of administrators and educators, “Thank you for agreeing to be part of this important dialogue which focuses on improving student success and college completion for all students through collective learning.”

South Texas College is sponsoring The Summit which intends to provide an opportunity for higher education, public school districts, state agencies, the business community, and community leaders to align the strengths of their respective organizations to work collaboratively on improving the college readiness of all high school graduates as well as prepare them for their successful journey towards college completion.

Dr. Reed said, “If we, in the Rio Grande Valley and the entire State of Texas, are going to meet the completion challenge, we must continue to strengthen our educational pathways.” She continued to say,  “It is important that our students experience a seamless transition from one segment of education to another.  By working together, we can positively impact the lives of the families in our communities by transforming our region to a college-going culture whereby attending and completing higher education is expected for all.”

She also said that by accepting this fundamental initiative means higher education, public school districts, the business community, and governmental officials must make a commitment to work together to address the challenges before us in ways we have never done before.

“By partnering together, we can make a significant contribution toward preparing all high school graduates from our region to attend and succeed in college.  I know we all share these concerns and your presence today endorses this commitment to work collaboratively,” Dr. Reed said.
