McAllen, TX, June 10, 2020- Ensuring an accurate count in the 2020 Census for the RGV is a mission that Sarah & Thelma help to achieve. They spearheaded a pilot for Nikki Rowe High School Seniors to be US 2020 Census Champions. Their goal is to provide awareness and education to the future generation of leaders.
Seniors had the opportunity to enter a raffle for 4 prizes of $1000, $500, $250 & $250 by submitting confirmation of 2020 U.S Census. They had an over 20% participation of Nikki Rowe High School Seniors within less than a month.
Ensuring an accurate count in 2020 is of vital important to ensure the Rio Grande Valley is equally represented in Congress and the Texas Legislature, is eligible to receive a fair share of federal and state funding over the next 10 years, and is provided with the visibility and political power commensurate with its population. The Rio Grande Valley has been historically under counted in the U.S. decennial Census and it is estimated the region is currently under counted by anywhere from 40,000 to 300,000 persons. If the RGV were accurately counted, the region could gain $63M to $473M annually or $630M to $4.7B over 10 years.
Sarah & Thelma goal is to share best practices of the pilot at a regional & state level to help underrepresented areas to be counted.
