Early release for McAllen schools Dec. 21

McAllen ISD schools will release students early on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Elementary schools will release at 12:30 p.m., middle schools and Lamar Academy at 1 p.m. The high schools plus Achieve Early College High and Instructions & Guidance Center will release at 1:15 p.m. Buses will run at those times. Classes will resume at their regular time on Monday, January 9. 

McAllen ISD School Board meeting

The next regular McAllen School Board meeting will be on Monday, January 16, at the McAllen ISD Administration Bldg. (2000 N. 23rd St.). The public portion of the meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Board Room. For more information, call 618-6094, or visit mcallenisd.org, select “About us” and then “Board of Trustees.”

McAllen ISD Science & Engineering Fair

The seventh annual McAllen ISD Science and Engineering Fair will be on Saturday, January 14, at McAllen ISD’s Lincoln Middle School (1601 N. 27th St.). Students in middle and high school will compete in many scientific categories. The public viewing will begin at 2 p.m. followed by the awards ceremony at 3 p.m. Call 618-6000 for more information.

McAllen High Mariachi Fundraiser

The 3-time state champion McAllen High Mariachi Oro is selling discount cards to raise money for its program. The CiCi’s Pizza Discount Cards are $10 each and have a $40 value in coupons.

Enrollment in McAllen ISD

Families wishing to enroll their children in McAllen ISD can go through the application process and contact the Student Support Services Department at 618-6031. The district has waived tuition for students who live outside the district boundaries and still wish to attend McAllen ISD schools.

Evening Study Centers

The McAllen Independent School District, in collaboration with Region I Education Service Center’s Adult Education Program, is planning to offer evening classes for students and their parents.

Classes will be offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8 p.m. during the fall semester. The program offers homework and tutoring assistance to students in Pre-Kindergarten – 12th grade. For the parents of these students, instruction in Literacy/ESL/GED/employment is provided.

Priority is given to parents with pre-school or school-aged children. Secondly, other adults with no school age children and residing in the McAllen school district will be accepted on a space-availability basis. Call 632-5192 for more information.

McAllen ISD Child Find

The McAllen Independent School District offers a free appropriate public education to all individuals with disabilities, ages 3-21, who qualify for special education.  Private school children, religious school children, and home schooled children with disabilities that reside within the district’s jurisdiction will have the opportunity to access special education services.  For Child Find information or to make a referral, contact Cynthia Medrano or Lisa Requenez at 1619 Galveston Ave. in McAllen or call 632-3285
