New bus stop service is launching In Hidalgo County this week

Edinburg, TX– On Thursday, July 15, Hidalgo County Precinct 4 is launching the first bus service in the unincorporated area of the county.  Valley Metro Route 12 which begins in Weslaco at the STC Mid-Valley Campus and ending at UTRGV in Edinburg will offer county residents a flexible route with access to county resources from San Carlos. 

Route 12 will run continuous daily Monday – Friday. The route provides access to Edcouch City Hall, Mercado Delta –Edcouch,  HEB – Elsa,  La Villa City Hall, VTC Bus Station – FM 107, Hidalgo County Head Start , John Austin Memorial  Center, Hidalgo County Courthouse, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), Edinburg City Hall, Walmart (University Dr.) Edinburg, Weslaco City Hall and STC Mid-Valley Campus.  The newest bus stop offers county residents access to critical resources such as UTRGV’s Area Health Education Center (AHEC), Head Start, WIC, and Amigos Del Valle.  “This new bus stop is providing residents with access to healthcare resources located in the northeastern part of the county, centralized County Courthouse and businesses in the area, as well as access to the university”, stated Precinct 4 Commissioner Ellie Torres. “With the continued growth in the county, this project helps address roadway congestion and enables people to access work and businesses more quickly and easily”. 

Valley Metro is managed by the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council (LRGVDC) and operates several routes within the four counties of the Rio Grande Valley. The service is free for children under 7 years of age, STC and UTRGV students. The cost is minimal for adults.  “I am most excited about bringing this quality transit service to the San Carlos area,” said Manuel Cruz, Executive Director of the LRGVDC. “We have a growing population and providing access to transportation is essential to meet the needs of county residents.”

Precinct 4 Commissioner Ellie Torres worked collaboratively with UTRGV and the LRGVDC to initiate the project.
