In an effort to address the skyrocketing insurance costs for transportation companies — which have tripled in recent years — BTA México, Lone Star Economic Alliance (LSEA), and RioPlex have joined forces to advocate for public policies aimed at alleviating this growing problem.

LSEA is an organization dedicated to promoting policies that reduce business costs and combat harmful practices that threaten job creation in Texas. It represents over 850 employers and organizations and includes Texans for Lawsuit Reform (TLR) as one of its key members. Founded in 1994, TLR’s mission is to end lawsuit abuse, with one of its major achievements being the reform of excessive medical malpractice lawsuits in 2003.

Nearly 50 transportation entrepreneurs from both sides of the border attended a meeting where representatives from LSEA and TLR, along with BTA México and RioPlex, discussed strategies to influence policymakers inWashington. The primary objective is to push for reforms to mitigate the negative impact of inflated medical costs in accident cases and rising insurance premiums, which jeopardize the survival of businesses in the sector.

Key industry figures present at the meeting included José Edgar Zamorano Santillán, CANACAR Delegate in Reynosa;María Nuria Ruiz García, CANACAR Delegate in Matamoros; and Jorge Lozano Saldaña, Representative of the Reynosa Transport Association. They all emphasized the urgent need to address this issue to prevent companies frombeing forced to shut down.

“This is an innovative idea: coming together to find ways to stop these disproportionate increases, which are clearly anabuse by insurance companies and the lawyers driving these lawsuits,” said Jorge Lozano Saldaña, Representative ofthe Reynosa Transport Association.

Joe A. García, LSEA Representative, added: “What we’re trying to do is control costs and bring more insurancecompanies to the Valley. Right now, only two companies provide coverage for transportation businesses, and we needmore competition to lower prices.”

The participants concluded by calling on all business leaders to join similar collaborative efforts to put an end to these abuses. By engaging in dialogue with policymakers, advocating for fairer rates, and complying with DOT inspections, companies can avoid becoming easy targets for attorneys and help create a more competitive andequitable environment for the transportation sector.
