Groups convene in Texas to urge passage of new immigration law
WASHINGTON, D.C.—On Tuesday, March 11, 2014, NCLR (National Council of La Raza) President and CEO Janet Murguía joined thousands of activists from throughout the country during Fast for Families Across America, a collaborative campaign among a diverse group of partners, including NCLR, that represent faith, immigrant, labor and civil rights communities working to find a comprehensive solution to our nation’s broken immigration system. The groups converged in Arlington, Texas, at a morning press conference and conducted afternoon visits to the offices of several key Republican members of Congress, including Representatives Joe Barton (R–Texas) and Sam Johnson (R–Texas).
“I’m pleased to join Fast for Families Across America and a host of other state and local leaders to send a strong message, not just to the Texas congressional delegation that we met today but to the entire House of Representatives, saying that it is time for action, not excuses, on immigration reform. They need to deliver on legislation to create an immigration system that works for every community and for our country as a whole. That is the only lasting, complete solution to this issue,” said Murguía.
The Fast for Families Across America tour kicked off on February 24 and concludes on April 9 in Washington, D.C. In addition to congressional in-district visits, activists have held community town halls to elevate public discourse on the issue, highlighting the real impact of failing to fix the current system, which has divided families and kept hardworking immigrants from fully contributing to the nation’s progress.
