Recently, Rep. Filemon Vela was appointed to serve as a member of the U.S. delegation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Parliamentary Assembly by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The NATO Parliamentary Assembly facilitates awareness and understanding of the key issues affecting the security of the Euro-Atlantic area and supports national oversight by legislative bodies like the U.S. Congress over defense and security.
As a member of this bipartisan U.S. delegation, Rep. Vela participated in the 2019 meeting of NATO Parliamentary Assembly. With 130 legislators from 29 nations in attendance, key topics included:
- The future of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty following Russian violations of the pact.
- Cooperative efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.
- Russian attempts to destabilize NATO with cyber attacks, the dissemination of false information, and military operations intended to threaten its neighbors.
“I look forward to continue working with my Congressional colleagues, and our NATO allies, to strengthen the U.S. commitment to this critical international security alliance. Now more than ever, our partnership with NATO is critical to maintaining the security of our nation, and I will bring the concerns of the United States and my South Texas constituents to this international organization,” Rep. Vela finalized.
