WASHINGTON — This week, the National Retail Federation (NRF) named Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) one of their “Heroes of Main Street” for consistently supporting public policy priorities important to the retail industry and its millions of small businesses. As part of the National Retail Federation’s annual Retail Advocates Summit fly-in, the NRF recognized a bipartisan group of members of Congress for their support of retail industry priorities such as international trade, patent reform, health care, tax reform and workforce policies that work for employees and employers alike.
Congressman Cuellar said, “I thank the National Retail Federation for working with us to protect small business industries. I want to recognize the hardworking employers and employees in the retail industry in my district, from cities like San Antonio, Laredo, and Mission to rural communities like Floresville, Pleasanton, and Rio Grande City. When provided an opportunity to support legislation that would benefit workers and the businesses that employ them, I want to produce concrete results. I always strive to improve conditions for workers and spur job creation in my district.”
“Retailers and consumers are feeling good about the state of the U.S. economy, and a big part of that is the result of lawmakers who have made economic growth and job creation a top priority,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “As a Hero of Main Street, Congressman Cuellar truly understands that the decisions made in Washington have a real impact on local businesses and communities across the country.”
The Hero of Main Street award was created by NRF in 2013, and eligibility is based on key votes, bill sponsorship and advocacy to advance retailers’ priorities. Recipients have supported policies that recognize the contributions of the retail industry, and have worked to encourage a “vibrant, sustained and healthy” retail sector. Congressman Cuellar has previously received this award in 2015 and 2016.
