McAllen Municipal Court Judge Lauren Renee Sepúlveda was recently elected to the office of Chair-Elect of the Texas Young Lawyers Association at the board’s recent meeting. Judge Sepúlveda will serve as Chair-Elect of Texas Young Lawyers Association from 2021-2022 and as Chairwoman from 2022-2023.

The Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA), commonly referred to as the “public service arm” of the State Bar of Texas, was organized in 1930. TYLA’s primary purposes are to facilitate the administration of justice, foster respect for the law, and advance the role of the legal profession in serving the public. TYLA’s programs offer information on legal topics to the general public, directed toward underserved members of our communities, and assists Texas lawyers in developing and maintaining their legal practices.

All licensed Texas lawyers 36 years old or younger or in their first five years of practice, regardless of age, are automatically members of TYLA. Currently, there are almost 26 thousand Texas lawyers who are members of TYLA.

“I am beyond excited and honored to continue to serve Texas Young Lawyers Association in this new role,” said Judge Sepúlveda. “TYLA is composed of so many incredible servant leaders who do so much good for their communities and the state bar. I am humbled by the trust they have placed in me by electing me to serve as their chairwoman in 2022-2023. Together, TYLA will continue doing the good, challenging, and necessary work to better serve our communities and the State Bar of Texas.”

Judge Sepúlveda has served as District 13 Director (representing young lawyers from Starr, Hidalgo, Cameron, Willacy, Kenedy, and Kleberg counties) on the Texas Young Lawyers Association Board of Directors since June 2017 and was previously elected to serve as Secretary of the Executive Committee from 2020-2021. In her time on the TYLA Board of Directors, she has participated in the running of the National Trial Competition and served as project lead on The Paper Chase Legal Writing Competition and last year’s Lawyers Passport for Basic Immigration Law. Judge Sepúlveda has served as project co-lead on Proud to Be An American, a Texas Bar Foundation project that focused on civics education, and currently serves as project co-lead on TYLA’s racial justice project, which is currently under development.
