McAllen, Texas – City of McAllen leaders, alongside the McAllen Independent School District (MISD), gathered today for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the community’s newest joint-use space: Morris/Perez Park. McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos praised the project as a model of cooperation and community building. “This new park represents what can be achieved when our City and our School District work together for the benefit of our community,” said Mayor Villalobos. “It’s more than just green space, it’s a place where students, families, and neighbors can gather, play, and grow together.”
The new park, located in between Morris Middle School and Perez Elementary, represents years of collaboration between the City of McAllen and MISD to create a shared space that benefits students, families, and neighbors. City Manager Isaac Tawil emphasized the long-term vision behind the project. “Our goal has always been to provide amenities that serve both present and future generations,” said Tawil. “This new park allows us to expand recreational opportunities while strengthening our neighborhoods. This park reflects our ongoing commitment to building a stronger, healthier McAllen.”
The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department worked with the McAllen Engineering Department to bring the project forward, with Milnet Architectural Services overseeing the design and RG Enterprises completing the improvements. For McAllen Parks and Recreation Director Denny Meline, the park is an important addition to the city’s park system. “This park is more than just a new space, it is another chapter in our growing park system,” said Meline. “We’re proud to see Morris/Perez Park open its gates and welcome the community.”
The $1.4 million project came in under budget and includes a wide range of amenities: a restroom facility with an adult changing table; a decomposed granite trail with concrete curbs; Musco field lighting; benches and picnic tables; chess tables; landscaping; bike racks; entry arches; and an ADA-compliant walkway connecting the school and park. Morris/Perez Park will be open to the public daily, from dusk until 11:00 p.m., offering a welcoming and inclusive space for recreation, relaxation, and community engagement.
