PHARR – More than 2,400 middle school students in Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD had the opportunity to experience voting during a Mock Election held Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020.
According to PSJA Middle School Social Studies Coordinator Celena Hoglund, social studies teachers in the district’s eight middle schools engaged students by having them conduct presentations on both major Presidential candidates, relevant issues, and a mock election.
“As a U.S. history teacher, it is imperative that we teach our students the process of voting and its importance as a civic duty,” said Liberty Middle School Teacher Esther Zarate. “As students finished our Mock Election, Zoe Lopez, one of my students stated she now felt prepared as a future voter and stressed the importance of being informed about the candidates.”
Exposing students to learn about their civic duties is part of the district’s vision and mission of preparing students to participate, compete, and excel in a global society to foster multi-generational prosperity.
“Thank you to our incredible Social Studies team for coming together to provide such an enriching experience for our middle school students,” said PSJA Superintendent Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo. “We want to help our students become successful and responsible citizens of tomorrow and part of that is exercising their right to vote as soon as they turn 18.”
