EDINBURG,Texas – Friday marked a significant milestone for local infrastructure as the groundbreaking ceremony for the Mission-McAllen Drain Phase 1 took place in Precinct 4.    “This drain will be widened and will double its capacity; it will expand from what I call a four lane water highway to an 8 lane water highway,” said Precinct 4 Commissioner Ellie Torres. “This groundbreaking represents our commitment to continue improving drainage infrastructure in the precinct.”

The Mission-McAllen Drain project, a comprehensive initiative divided into four phases, aims to enhance and modernize the drainage infrastructure over a total span of 5.3 miles. Phase 1, which began Friday, will cover significant ground in improving drainage systems in the precinct, impacting over 15,000 acres west of Precinct 4. The scope of Phase 1 includes extensive excavation and embankment work, removal of existing down drains, installation of new drainage systems, and re-grading, reconstruction, and widening of the drain. With a cost  of approximately $2 million, this phase is set to address critical drainage issues and bolster the resilience of local infrastructure against flooding and related challenges.

“The capacity of water this drain will additionally hold will be around 69 million gallons of water, this is designed for a 100 year flood.” said Omar Anzaldua Jr., Assistant General Manager for Hidalgo County District No. 1.

Each phase of the project will build upon the progress made in previous stages, with the ultimate goal of providing enhanced flood control and supporting sustainable development across the precinct.
