The Mission Economic Development Corporation has launched Mission Ready, a paid internship program that connects students with hands-on work experience across local industries. The initiative links classroom learning with real-world application, placing high school and college students in internships with businesses throughout Mission.
Teclo Garcia, CEO of Mission EDC, said the program is designed to deliver “skill-building, mentorship, and career exposure,” emphasizing its focus on preparing students for employment after graduation. Participants will work in sectors including pharmacies, manufacturing, and professional services, gaining practical experience in workplace settings.
The program has drawn strong interest from both employers and students. Garcia noted that participation has exceeded expectations, with “more than double the number of applicants to slots available,” while a surplus of local businesses stepped forward to host paid interns. The internships are scheduled to begin this summer.
Mission Ready is supported through partnerships with Mission Consolidated Independent School District, Sharyland Independent School District, South Texas College, and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Garcia said the collaboration helps align education with workforce needs, supports local employers, and expands opportunities for students.
Work-based learning programs such as internships have been widely cited as effective tools for improving job readiness. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that paid internships are associated with higher rates of full-time employment after graduation compared with unpaid or no internship experience.
Garcia said the initiative is intended to benefit both students and the local economy by building a pipeline of skilled workers. “We’re not just preparing students,” he said, “we’re strengthening our workforce, supporting local businesses and investing in the future of Mission’s economy.”
Applications for the program are open through the end of April, and students can apply online. https://www.missionedc.com/grow-your-business/programs/mission-ready
