Texas Border Business
Mission, Texas- Three students from Mission High School (MHS) have earned a chair in the Texas Music Educators Association 6A All-State Band. This is considered the highest level of achievement for any music student in the state of Texas.
Carlos Gerena Alba earned first chair English Horn. Jose Castillo earned first chair euphonium. Esteban Lopez earned first chair tuba. This is the highest number of first chair honors of any high school in the area. This is also the first time students have earned first chair, All-State honors for their respective instruments in MHS and district history.
6A is unique in that any 5A or 6A band student is eligible to audition for a spot in the 6A band, making it the toughest individual contest offered. MHS tied for the second most 6A All-State student among all 6A programs in Area G, which stretches from Brownsville to San Antonio, to Corpus Christi, to Laredo. Students in the TMEA All-State Bands represent the top 2% of band students in the state.
MHS had three other students who placed well in the competitions for All-State honors. They are: Esteban Pena, 14 chair, Bb clarinet; Eduardo Rivera, third chair, alto saxophone (1st alternate to All-State); Angel Alanis, 12th Chair, trumpet.
