Mission, Texas – Mission Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) officials were notified late Friday that their application to the emergency Meals-To-You program had been approved, opening the door to a way for all district students to receive 10 meals a week for the duration of the COVID-19 school closure. The program services are also going to students in the Head Start Mission II, III, IV, as well as the units located at Capt. J. Castro Elementary, and Alton Elementary. Out-of-district transfer students are also included, as they are enrolled with Mission CISD.
“It was such a hard decision when we had to suspend our grab and go meals distribution to students,” said Dr. Carol G. Perez, superintendent. “We know so many of our families depend upon our meal services. So when we heard about the emergency Meals-To-You opportunity shortly after we suspended our services, we immediately began the application process with the hopes this would come through for our families.”
Dr. Perez said that once the district quickly completed the application, it was sent to the Texas Department of Agriculture for their required signatures, and then on to the Meals-To-You program for final consideration. She said this basically creates a partnership between the district and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Baylor University.
District officials are spending the weekend updating mailing addresses for as many students as possible as the meals will be mailed directly to the families.
“We need to get our data file to the Meals-to-You program on Monday so our families can start getting the extra help as quickly as possible during this stressful time,” Dr. Perez said.
Dr. Perez also said she was notified that Mission CISD is the first school district in the state of Texas to have been approved for the Meals-To-You program to serve all students. Something that even caught the attention of officials in Washington, D.C. Dr. Perez said Mission mayor Armando O’Caña told her that he received a call from a Washington, D.C. official congratulating him on the Mission CISD being the first district in the state-approved for the meals program.
According to materials from Meals-To-You, once the enrollment process is completed, families will get a Meals-to-You box delivered to their home for each Mission CISD enrolled student. Each box will include 10 breakfasts and 10 lunches—enough food for each student for a week!
All foods are shelf-stable, which means parents don’t have to worry about them expiring anytime soon. With Meals-to-You, kid-friendly meals are delivered—for FREE—directly to the families so they won’t have to worry about:

If parents aren’t home when the box is delivered, no worries. The boxes are packed for security, and because the food is shelf-stable, parents don’t have to worry about refrigerating the foods immediately.
