The United Way of South Texas has named Michelle Lea Zamora, Vice President of Corporate Banking at Frost Bank, is now chair of the first VITA committee, and has convened a group of community leaders from financial institutions, insurance companies and educators to spearhead the 2014-2015 VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program this year.
“We’re proud to offer this program because most of the people we prepare taxes for are receiving refunds, and that’s money benefitting not only those individuals, but the entire community,” Zamora said. “These tax refunds represent opportunities for families and individuals in our community to have increased financial stability. With that stability comes a greater quality of life,” she said.
The focus is on recruiting volunteers and securing corporate funds to open 10 to 12 centers that will provide free income tax return preparation for families in Hidalgo and Starr Counties that earn $53,000 or less. To volunteer and/or sponsor, call (956) 686-6331 and ask for Thelma Garza.
