Mexican Officials met with Border U.S. Consuls

McAllen, Texas – The heads of Public Security, Economic Development and Tourism of the Government of Tamaulipas, held an unprecedented meeting with the Matamoros and Nuevo Laredo U.S. Consuls on Wednesday, aiming to strengthen the existing bilateral relationship and to focus in a regional and joint strategy for development.

Representing the Government of Tamaulipas were the State Offices of Public Security, Tourism and Economic Development, Fernando Olivera Rocha, Carlos García González, and Augusto Cruz Morales; while General Consul of Matamoros, Neda Brown and from Nuevo Laredo, Kathryn L. Flachsbart represented the U.S. Government.

This is a new approach from the Tamaulipas administration to show U.S. authorities the positive results and indicators in important fields as security, tourism and the economy.

Augusto Cruz shared important achievements such as the professionalization of the security forces officers and the creation of proximity police and road assistance, that had lowered the crime rate in state highways.

Fernando Olivera Rocha stressed that thanks to the actions implemented in terms of road safety, last year Tamaulipas welcomed a record total of visitors – 8 million people.

He also praised the importance of U.S. tourism for Tamaulipas, pointing out the border exchange, through medical and hunting tourism, generated between South Texas and the Tamaulipas cities located along the border.

Carlos García, head of State Economic Development, reported that Tamaulipas has become the 8th state in the country with the highest foreign direct investment, in which the United States participates with 55.2%.

As a common agreement, Tamaulipas officials and U.S. Consulates heads will meet every two months in order to share the progress of Tamaulipas in security, economic development, and tourism and continue to strengthen the bilateral relationship between both Governments.
