WASHINGTON – Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) released a statement following the adoption of the new Mexican Labor Reform, a crucial step in the passage of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA):

“This week, Mexico’s upper chamber passed a historic labor reform package, raising Mexican worker standards. This is a step in the right direction for trade as this legislation was drafted to align with labor commitments made in the USMCA. Specifically, it gives workers in Mexico the right to organize; establishes the creation of tribunals and a federal center in charge of solving controversies between workers, employers, and unions; and provides that employers must engage in collective bargaining, if requested by employees.

As I’ve said all along, we must continue working to ratify this trilateral trade agreement, so that we may continue to capitalize on the economic benefits NAFTA has facilitated for over two decades. As a border representative, I know firsthand the impacts that this deal will have on border communities and our country’s economy. I will continue working with my colleagues to strengthen our economy and our trade relationship with Mexico.”
