On October 23rd, 6:00 pm at Quinta Mazatlan, lucky art enthusiasts of the Valley will enjoy an opportunity to explore the vibrant world of folk art with seasoned connoisseurs, George and Virginia Gause. Having voyaged throughout Mexico countless times over 40 years in search of original works of folk art, the Gause’s have gained unique expertise in their field. With over 40 excursions to Oaxaca alone, the pair has amassed a breathtaking collection and wishes to share their knowledge and treasures with locals.
Become acquainted with what distinguishes folk art from other forms of art and explore the Gause’s extensive, personal collection. Each piece is effervescent and with it carries a rich history. Learn about these histories and what elements to consider while searching for and obtaining folk art pieces of your own. Finally, follow the experts on a tour of the dazzling Ann Maddox Moore Folk Art room here at Quinta Mazatlan. Filled with Serenas, Trees of Life, Diablos and Alebrijes (fictional wildlife) it’s easily the most vibrant room you’ll ever visit. The Gause’s will welcome a Q & A session, following their presentation.
Now retired, George Gause worked at the University of Texas-Pan American Library for 38 years. As a Special Collections Librarian, his focus was on local Valley history and Hispanic genealogy. Virginia continues her work of 42 years as Media and Marketing Librarian at UTPA Library. She also serves as moderator of ArtsRGV.com, a weekly electronic calendar highlighting cultural events in the Valley.
The Nature Lecture series takes place Thursday evenings through April 2015 and is proudly sponsored by Thurmond Eye Associates.
