On Friday, Oct. 2, El Paso had the highest single-day count of new COVID-19 cases since July, with 329 new cases. Public health officials reported 4.030 active cases, 700+ more than the previous week.

The positivity rate from testing is increasing with a seven-day rolling average of 9.62 percent, which is well above the benchmark of five percent considered safe for reopening. At five percent, health authorities consider “community spread” to be under control. In addition to an increase in new cases, hospitalizations are up.

As a result, El Paso and Canutillo school districts have delayed in-person instruction.

Also, the City of El Paso announced an order prohibiting trick or treating for Halloween.

It’s not only happening in El Paso. We are seeing surges across the country. NPR reporting indicates 42,467 new cases per day, up from 34,773 three weeks ago. And of course, the President, First Lady, as well as numerous elected officials and White House and campaign staff who have been around the President are infected.

Stay safe. The initial advice is still the best. Avoid crowds and be prudent about your daily movements in public by wearing a mask, maintaining physical distance from others, and washing hands frequently.
