RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday the hiring of Lisa Carvajal as the men’s and women’s tennis assistant coach.
“This is a dream position for me,” Carvajal said. “This is something that I have wanted since the summer, and I was lucky enough to get the call from coach West Nott. I am grateful to him and to coach Nathan Robinson for this opportunity. I am really excited to be here and join both teams.”
Carvajal, originally from McAllen and an alum of PSJA High School, played four seasons of collegiate tennis after spending two seasons at Laredo Community College (2015-17) and two seasons at Texas A&M-Kingsville (2017-19).
In her final season at Texas A&M-Kingsville, Carvajal earned All-Lone Star Conference (LSC) honors in singles while teaming with Maya Donkor to earn All-LSC honors in doubles. Carvajal reached as high as No. 12 in the South Central Region’s singles ranking while winning nine match that season.
Carvajal and Donkor finished the season ranked 40th in the ITA Division II doubles rankings while reaching as high as 15th and ranked No. 2 in the South Central Region’s doubles ranking.
“We are thrilled to have Lisa be a part of our program and she will be a huge part of our success moving forward,” UTRGV women’s tennis head coach West Nott said. “She comes from a very strong tennis background and her mental intangibles will give us a competitive edge. Her wide variety of life experiences will be an asset in all the situations that might arise in coaching the players and running the program. We are very appreciative to have her be part of our team and I look forward to learning from her.”
“We are extremely excited to have Lisa be joining our program,” UTRGV men’s tennis head coach Nathan Robinson said. “She has competed at a high level and trained with some of the best coaches in the United States. She will bring energy, insight, and be a great person, for myself and Coach Nott to work with and grow the men’s and women’s tennis programs. V’s Up!”
