WHAT: Media Open House for Disaster Recovery Center in McAllen
WHEN & Tomorrow, Friday, July 20, 2018 10:00 a.m.
WHERE: Disaster Recovery Center, Old Church Winery, 700 N. Main St., McAllen
WHY: After last month’s unprecedented flood event, many McAllen residents are still trying to rebuild their homes and property. The State of Texas and the Federal Emergency Management Administration (F.E.M.A.) has opened three Disaster Recovery Centers in Hidalgo County alone, and one in Cameron County, with bilingual representatives who will be housed at these facilities or out in the field, to assist all affected residences with the process in applying for recovery assistance from the federal government.
“I want to invite the media to come take a tour of this facility, to help bring awareness and information to their audiences so that those who need this assistance, will feel more at ease and comfortable about this process,” said Mayor Darling. “The Disaster Recovery Center will help our residents rebuild their homes and hopefully, get back to normal life.”
The Media Open House is for media only. The facility will have a soft opening later that day at 1:00 p.m. and be open until 7:00 p.m. It will then open on Saturday, July 21, 2018, from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., seven days a week after that until further notice.
Homeowners, renters and business owners are equally eligible to apply for assistance. All residents affected by the flood should visit any one of the four centers throughout the Rio Grande Valley, make inquiries and keep applying through the process until they have exhausted all options for applying and getting approved for recovery funding assistance.
Although FEMA cannot make you whole, it may help your recovery move forward by providing grants for basic repairs to make your home safe, sanitary and secure. FEMA assistance may also provide temporary help with a place for you and your family to stay while you build your own recovery plan.
