The City of McAllen recently replaced oak trees in downtown McAllen with 15 native Comas trees.  The Comas are native to the Rio Grande Valley and are drought tolerant. Comas boast a canopy large enough to provide shade but will not impact the sidewalk or brick pavers.

According to Interim McAllen Parks & Recreation Department Director, the oak trees removed had grown too big for the swell they had been planted in, damaging the foundations of the sidewalks and the brick pavers.

“It was really important to keep the trees along Main St., to not only give shade and character to the downtown area, but also, because of the incredible environmental positive impact trees provide,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. “This is keeping with McAllen’s Tree City U.S.A. designation.”
