The past week, McAllen Public Utility customer service representatives were made aware of several utility customers receiving scam calls. The scam callers threatened the MPU customers of a possible water disconnect if a payment was not made. However, because three of the customers take advantage of the utility’s automatic bank draft service, they became suspicious and knew they were not in danger of being disconnected.
“The McAllen Public Utility does not make phone calls seeking payment and threatening disconnection of service,” said Mark Vega, General Manager for MPU. “While we understand sometimes people may fall behind or forget to make a payment, we follow-up with a letter and ask customers to come or contact us directly to make arrangements. Whoever is making these calls is not a part of the McAllen Public Utility.”
The phone number that appeared to those customers who received the scam calls was 1-800-401-6215. Customers who receive a call from this number should disregard and contact the McAllen Public Utility and the McAllen Police Department.
