(McAllen, TX) In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, many people have evacuated to the Rio Grande Valley for safety. McAllen Public Library is opening its doors to evacuees to offer free access to their computer labs, wi-fi, printing services, and other valuable library resources, as well as providing a comfortable place to charge phones and devices. Printing services will be free to evacuees with code word HARVEY.
“We understand that people will need Internet to stay in touch with family and friends, start insurance claims, and check e-mail,” says Kate P. Horan, Library Director. “MPL is ready to offer our services during this critical period.”
E-cards will be issued so that users will be able to use a computer for up to three hours and have access to thousands of downloadable e-books, e-audiobooks, streaming music, digital newspapers and magazines.
The Main Library provides Family Place® Play Space, a unique, open play area where young children and their caregivers can freely explore and learn. Programs such as Toddler Storytime, Kinder Kids, and Lego Club are free and open to any family that would like to attend.
Residents who would like to help can donate food and supplies at any McAllen Public Library location from now through September 3rd. The most needed items include bottled water, peanut butter, easy open tuna, potted meat, vienna sausages, paper towels, and toilet paper. All donations will be delivered to H-E-B for distribution in the affected areas. MPL will coordinate with H.E.B. and the RGV Food Bank to have all donations delivered to those in need.
“We who live here in McAllen know what a compassionate and caring community we are,” said City of McAllen Mayor Jim Darling. “We are proud to open our arms and most especially, our hearts to all of our family and friends in need and let them know that McAllen is here for them in their time of need. I encourage our residents to give generously: give of your time, give of your prayers and give what you can to help our fellow Texans.”
Darling stressed his appreciation for all efforts being made across the City of McAllen to send support and response teams, this local effort to help and of course, all the work being done across the city and the entire Rio Grande Valley to help Texans get back on their feet again.
