The McAllen Public Library (MPL) is kicking off its Youth Winter Drive to help keep children and teens in our community warm this season. The effort calls for collecting winter essentials for local youth, with donations supporting the Teen Essential Shelves at the Lark, Palm View, and Main branches.

This year, the drive has expanded to include infants through eleven-year-olds, making it easier for families to access the items they need during the colder months. Community members are invited to donate new or gently used winter wear, including coats, sweaters, gloves, scarves, beanies, and other cold-weather essentials.

“Our library has always been a place where families can turn for support,” said Kate Horan, Library Director. “This drive helps us meet real needs and makes a difference for kids who deserve to feel warm and cared for.”

McAllen City Manager Isaac J. Tawil shared his appreciation for the effort, noting, “What I value about this drive is how practical it is. A warm coat or a pair of gloves can ease a family’s stress during the colder months, and it shows how our library continues to look after our community in thoughtful ways.”

McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos added, “The library does more than offer books and programs. It steps in when families need help, and this winter drive is a great example. I encourage anyone who can donate to do so because it directly benefits our local children.”

Community members of all ages are encouraged to join MPL in this effort. Every donation counts, whether it’s a new or gently used coat, gloves, scarf, or beanie. Your contribution helps ensure that local children and teens stay warm this winter. Drop off items at any MPL service desk from December 1 through December 26 and help spread warmth!

All items collected will be shared across MPL branches to reach as many families as possible. Donated items will be cleaned thanks to Quick Spin Laundromat prior to distribution.
