McAllen, Texas – Families are invited to celebrate “El día de los Niños/ El día de los Libros” (Children’s Day/Book Day) with fun games, crafts, a storytime, popcorn, and a performance by Las Palmas Ballet Folklorico on Sunday, April 29 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the Children’s Department of the Main Library! Every child in attendance will receive a free book while supplies last.
Día is an enhancement of Children’s Day, which began in 1925. Children’s Day was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. In 1996, nationally acclaimed children’s book author Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of childhood and children with literacy to found El día de los niños/El día de los libros. Today, Día is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds.
“Last year, we hosted 300 children and their parents and distributed over 150 books at our annual Día event,” said Roberto Zapata, Assistant Director of Public Services. “This year, we hope to give out even more books. It’s important to get books into the hands of children and we are excited to be a part of this nationwide celebration.”
The celebration was made possible by the Lone Star Dia Grant through the Texas Center for the Book, which is administered through the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The entire community is invited to celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories, and libraries.
