McAllen city leaders honored professional golfer Abraham Ancer during a ceremony at Champion Lakes Golf Course. They recognized his $100,000 donation to build a new short game practice area and proclaimed January 5 as “Abraham Ancer Day.”
The donation will create a space where golfers of all skill levels can learn, practice, and enjoy the game. It aims to expand recreational opportunities at the course.
Ancer, a native of McAllen, Texas, who grew up in Reynosa, Mexico, has represented Mexico in major events, including the Presidents Cup and the Olympic Games. Despite his international success, he stays closely tied to his community.
City Manager Isaac “Ike” J. Tawil said, “Abraham’s philosophy, don’t change the game, improve your skills, exemplifies a mindset for success.” He added that Ancer’s generosity “will create lasting opportunities for golfers and reflects the spirit of giving back that strengthens our community.”
Mayor Javier Villalobos stated, “Abraham Ancer represents the best of McAllen. His commitment to excellence, his achievements, generosity, and his continued connection to our community serve as an inspiration to residents of all ages.”
Carlos Espinosa, Director of Golf at Champion Lakes and a former professional, unveiled a commemorative plaque. He shares a longtime friendship with Ancer and his family, who attended the event.
