In 2014, McAllen I.S.D. entered into an agreement with the City of McAllen for landscaping of the five-acre north parcel and one-acre south parcel of the campus, which also included adding a walking trail and repairing the park’s pavilion. The goal was to prepare the park to be able to offer sports and recreational programing and use by the general public.
Thanks to Dist. 5 Commissioner Victor “Seby” Haddad, the park has been upgraded to include skatepark and other amenities, including two youth soccer fields and a dog run. The pavilion has received a concrete overlay for sports play and an exercise pad has been installed and awaiting new equipment to arrive and be installed by January 2022.
The skatepark is the third of its kind for the City of McAllen. The skatepark equipment and other amenities were installed by Spohn Ranch for under $100,000, which also included fencing, benches, exercise pad and equipment, soccer fields equipment and additional landscaping.
The skateboard park project had been long discussed but delayed due to the pandemic in 2020. The final phase of Crockett Park will add landscaping on the north field to include native butterfly attracting plants and shrubs. The park will continue to be flood irrigated with the exception of the dog run portion. Once completed, the total cost of the park improvements should be $231,821.33.
