MCALLEN, Texas – A Hidalgo County judge found Carlos Mario Vargas, 41, of McAllen, guilty of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child and sentenced Vargas to 30 years in prison.
On December 8, 2019, the McAllen Police Department received a sexual assault report involving two minor children. The children, ages 8 and 10, were interviewed by a forensic interviewer and each underwent a sexual assault examination. The ensuing investigation revealed that Vargas had sexually abused both children on various occasions.
On June 24, 2024, Vargas entered a plea of guilty and was sentenced by the court to 30 years on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. The case was heard by Judge Ysmael Fonseca in the 476th District Court of Hidalgo County, Texas.
“Our office, together with the ongoing support and dedication from local law enforcement agencies will continue to devote all necessary resources to bring child predators to justice,” said Hidalgo County District Attorney Toribio “Terry” Palacios.
The charges are the result of an investigation conducted by the McAllen Police Department, the Hidalgo and Starr County Children’s Advocacy Center, and the Weslaco DPS Crime Lab.
Chief Assistant Criminal District of Major Crimes Hope Palacios prosecuted the case.
