For the seventh straight year, McAllen ISD has a team participating in the National Masterminds Competition which begins Friday in Washington, D.C. In fact, this year, the district is sending two teams.
Both teams are from the International Baccalaureate Programme at Lamar Academy. Each qualified for nationals based on their finish in tournaments last fall.
“(We’ve had) lots of practice,” team member Gabriel Ramirez said. “Definitely, (we’re) very excited. Hopefully, we can put on a quality performance.”
One of the teams won a state championship this past school year at a tournament in Houston.
Their Advisor, Mr. Alvaro Ojeda, has guided the team to nationals all seven years he has sponsored the team.
McAllen ISD is a district of choice, offering STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) in Pre-K-12, International Baccalaureate in grades 1-12, Advanced Placement courses, Career Technical Education in 15 career clusters where students earn professional licenses or certifications, four dual enrollment academies and an Early College High School where students can earn an Associate Degree before they graduate high school.
