McAllen ISD’s Achieve Early College High pulled off two amazing performances at the U.S. National Chess Championships March 15-17 in Schaumburg, Illinois, bringing home two trophies.

They placed 19th out of 49 schools in the Under 1600 Division and 24th out of 67 schools in the Under 1200 Division. This is the second straight year for the Achieve team to earn tremendous accolades. In 2018, Achieve ECHS won a state championship. McAllen ISD’s middle school and elementary schools will compete at the chess national events later this spring.

Achieve chess team members include Joshua Cruz, Cameron Williams, Emilio Aguirre, Esmeralda Morales, Hannah Salazar, Jose Zamora, Cristobal Ortiz, Lorenzo Solis, Jose Arispe,  Bryan Ham, Javier Becerril, and Jose Arjona.
