McALLEN, Texas – McAllen International Airport (MFE) proudly announces its all-time total traveler record of over 1 million total passengers in a calendar year. This accomplishment reflects the airport’s continued record-breaking growth and enhanced connectivity, due in large part to the addition of four new nonstop destinations to Austin, Cancun, Mexico City, and Tampa-St. Petersburg.
As they arrived, the 1 Millionth Flyer was honored at McAllen International Airport with on-site activations and gifted year-round tickets to all of McAllen’s major festivals. Complete with special 1 Millionth Flyer merchandise and refreshments, MFE celebrated this wonderful achievement with community.
“Thanks to McAllen International Airport’s expanding air service, reaching the 1 millionth flyer marks the unbreakable spirit of McAllen in this record year,” said City of McAllen Commissioner – District 2 Joaquin “J.J.” Zamora. “We’ve not only opened up more opportunities for travelers, but we’ve also positioned McAllen as the Valley’s leisure and business gateway.”
Three new air carriers and four new nonstop routes from McAllen debuted in 2024: Austin via Delta Air Lines, Mexico City via Aeromexico, Cancun via Volaris and Tampa-St. Petersburg through Allegiant Air. These new flights are part of the airport’s nine national and now international nonstop destinations. “McAllen’s non-stop flights do a lot more than just connect two destinations,” Isaac J. Tawil, City Manager, said. “They connect people, opportunities, economies and help make dreams happen. This historic milestone for McAllen International Airport is a great indicator of successes in our region.”
Earlier this year, McAllen International Airport saw a 25% increase in year-over-year traffic and was granted $7.4 million in federal funding to improve and expand the airport. In addition to providing a premium and comfortable travel experience for those seeking leisure or business travel, all six MFE airlines take passengers to premiere destinations and major airport hubs to travel anywhere in the world.
“We are continuously improving, working on renovations, expansion and have grown to offer nonstop flights to Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Orlando, Tampa, Los Angeles, Cancun, Mexico City and Austin,” said Director of Aviation Jeremy Santoscoy, P.E. “We are proud to serve our customers and work never stops as we study and search for new travel opportunities for our great region.”
