The McAllen Housing Authority (McAHA) held a groundbreaking and grand opening event on May 12th to introduce the start of construction for the upcoming Hibiscus Village complex as well as their newly completed Green Jay apartment development. Chairman Ronnie Cruz commented “This is a proud day for affordable housing in the City of McAllen.”
The McAHA Board of Commissioners, City and County officials, Affordable Homes of South Texas representative, Representative from the office of U.S. Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, Brown Stone Group representative and special guests joined the event that highlighted the two developments.
The Hibiscus Village Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) development set forth by McAHA is expected to house 96 families, will offer 1,2- and 3-bedroom units with an anticipated completion by December 2021. The newly completed Green Jay development, also a McAHA LIHTC project, holds 120 units with 1,2- and 3-bedroom options and is currently at a 50% occupancy. Vice Chair Cerda commented, “These events serve to strengthen our mission to provide affordable housing for our hard-working families and we are proud of our accomplishments. We are extremely grateful for the collaborative efforts with the City of McAllen and many others to make these housing developments become a reality and positively impact the lives of many in our community.”
Although inclement weather conditions did not allow for the ground breaking ceremony, the events were combined for both facilities and group tours were offered at the Green Jay complex during the afternoon.
“Our agency has aligned itself with HUD’s strategic plan in providing affordable housing via The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) which, has been a key policy tool for preserving and expanding the supply of affordable rental housing. Green Jay and Hibiscus Village are two examples of how our agency is filling the gap for affordable housing in our great city of McAllen” stated McAHA Executive Director Rodolfo “Rudy” Ramirez Said. As McAHA leads the way in expansion and new developments, its mission to provide decent and safe affordable housing remains strong.
