The McAllen Fire Department will be installing smoke alarms provided by the American Red Cross in 100 homes. These homes were identified by the American Red Cross to be located in neighborhoods that have a high fire risk. One to three smoke alarms will be installed based on the need of the home: smoke alarms will be installed in bedrooms and/or every level of the household.
The American Red Cross provides the smoke alarms for events which are required to be installed by either a Red Cross volunteer and or fire department partner; they will not be distributed to the homeowner. Each service provided to a client is documented on a service acknowledgement form in order to account for smoke alarms.
The American Red Cross is able to install smoke alarms and manage the supply because of their generous donors. Once the smoke detectors are installed, the American Red Cross will also provide home fire safety education, including a safety checklist and home fire escape plan. Afterwards, it is up to the recipient to maintain and replace them after 10 years.
“We hope to continue with this campaign or create a similar program to better serve the needs of the community,” said Lt. Mark Zamora, McAllen Fire Department Public Education Officer.
Residents should not call the McAllen Fire Department for free smoke detectors.
