McALLEN – It’s become a McAllen tradition to give to those in need at Thanksgiving. McAllen Crime Stoppers is once again hosting their annual Turkey Giveaway and handing out 150 Thanksgiving dinners with all the trimmings to needy families at the McAllen Police Department on Wednesday, November 21 at 9 a.m. Families are preselected by McAllen police officers and McAllen ISD based on need.
“The McAllen Crime Stoppers program started this initiative to give back to our community for their continued support in fighting crime,” Janell Garcia, McAllen Crime Stoppers President said. “We partnered with the McAllen Police Department and H-E-B to make the holidays better for families in need with a turkey dinner.”
For the second year, McAllen PD will also have a “Turkey or Ticket” campaign to brighten up the holidays.
“We had such a great time last year stopping unsuspecting motorists. Instead of giving them tickets, the police officers offered them a turkey for the holidays,” Mayor Jim Darling said. “We met some incredible families last year who really needed the holiday cheer.”
This is the 16th year the McAllen Crime Stoppers program hosts the Turkey Giveaway.
“The McAllen Crime Stoppers program is vital to fighting crime in our community. We continue to see crime decrease because of the assistance of our community,” said Chief Victor Rodriguez, McAllen Police Department. “We would like to thank the continued support of the City of McAllen, H-E-B and the community for their support.”
