At the McAllen Legislative Wrap-Up Luncheon on October 3, 2025, City Manager Ike Tawil emphasized the importance of legislative staff and credited the Rio Grande Valley’s lawmakers for their influence in Austin. The event, hosted at the Embassy Suites Convention Center by the McAllen Chamber of Commerce and the McAllen Economic Development Corporation, marked the close of the 89th Texas Legislative Session.
Tawil opened his remarks by recognizing the demanding nature of legislative sessions. “Legislative sessions are always roller coasters. They’re always interesting. They’re always challenging,” he told attendees. He explained that what the public often does not see is the preparation that happens before the gavel falls. “What we don’t appreciate always is the hard work and preparation that goes in behind the scenes before the session,” Tawil said.
He singled out legislative staff for their contributions, asking those present to stand for recognition. “You’re the ones that, when we talk to our legislators, help us put potential to paper and get the legislation that drives this region of the state,” Tawil said. “Thank you very much for the hard work that you do in supporting the people that represent us.”
Tawil also highlighted the effectiveness of the Rio Grande Valley delegation, describing it as critical to the state’s lawmaking process. “The Valley’s delegation in Austin is a force to be reckoned with,” he said. “You can’t get legislation through either house in Austin if you don’t get it past this group of people. They work hard, they work hard for you, they listen to you, they are responsive to us.”
He concluded by welcoming state officials and thanking them for their service. “Welcome to McAllen,” Tawil said. “Thank you all for being here. Thank you for the hard work that you do, and I hope you all enjoy the presentation.”
The luncheon brought together lawmakers, city leaders, and community members to review the impact of the legislative session on South Texas.
