McALLEN, Texas – The McAllen Chamber of Commerce told Texas Border Business that the South Texas Chess Federation has chosen McAllen to host the prestigious 2024 Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship.

The championship, scheduled for January 2024, is anticipated to attract over 400 attendees to the McAllen Convention Center, potentially injecting over $315,000 into the local economy.

Richard Newman, President of the South Texas Chess Federation, confirmed, “We are delighted to reveal that the United States Chess Federation has approved our proposal to host the 2024 Pan-American Championship. The tournament will take place from January 4th to 7th, 2024 at the McAllen Convention Center.”

The McAllen Chamber’s Tourism Department, namely the Convention & Visitors Bureau, works tirelessly throughout the year to arrange conferences attracting a diverse range of participants. These events play a crucial role in contributing significant revenue to our city.

Established in 1946, the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship is the foremost intercollegiate team chess competition, held annually across the North and South American continents. Fans will be able to follow select matches live on platforms such as Twitch and chess.com.

Maritza Munoz, the Convention Sales Manager, expressed her excitement, saying, “We are looking forward to hosting this nationally acclaimed Chess Championship and are keen to continue collaborating with them for future tournaments.”
