Texas Border Business
Laura Robles, Latina Hope Coordinator for the McAllen Chamber of Commerce told Texas Border Business that Latina Hope takes place September 4, 2019. The question is, What is Latina Hope?
In 2009, the McAllen Chamber helped to launch Latina Hope, a program designed to help women create micro-businesses and produce additional revenues from home. The idea is to help them bring in additional income for their families. The program is a great example of a collaboration and is supported by the Chamber, Wells Fargo, United Way of South Texas and Calvary Baptist Church. We are proud to announce that at our last Session, Latina Hope Ignite Fund awarded 18 women a grant so that they could start or enhance their microbusiness.
The Program:
- The program is conducted in SPANISH and begins with basic workshops on finance information Sponsored by Wells Fargo.
- Every other session attendees have the opportunity to learn at least two crafts skills such as candle making, card making, jewelry making, knitting/crocheting/quilting, sewing and alterations, soap making, toy making, wreath making, and many other handmade skills.
- After attending five-six trainings, participants have the opportunity to prepare a project plan (basic business plan) and present their business idea to the Latina Hope judging panel.
- The panel decides if the project is mature enough to receive the Latina Hope Ignite fund. A Grant of up to $250 in materials, to help and encourage the creation of a new micro business.
