The McAllen Chamber’s Government Affairs Council will meet on Wednesday, June 27, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. at the McAllen Chamber, 1200 Ash Ave. in McAllen. Due to another meeting, Representative Munoz will not be able to be with us, but State Representative Oscar Longoria has confirmed to attend next week’s meeting.
Representative Longoria represents District 35, which includes cities in both Hidalgo and Cameron Counties. During the 85th Legislative Session, Texas House Speaker Joe Straus appointed him as Vice-Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. Having served two previous sessions as an at-large member on the committee, this powerful new appointment builds upon Representative Longoria’s influential leadership position and significant impact on the budget-writing process. This spring, Speaker Straus appointed him to the Legislative Budget Board, which is tasked with recommending a budget to the legislature before the legislative session begins. Additionally, he also serves as Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Articles I, IV, and V, on the Investments & Financial Services Committee and Local & Consent Calendars Committee.
Representative Longoria was born in Mission and raised in South Texas. Longoria attended South Texas College for one year before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies. In 2007, Rep. Longoria graduated with his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas School of Law.
