The McAllen Housing Authority (McAHA) awarded a check of thousands of dollars to Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) resident Veronica Cano this January for graduating from the Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS).
Dedication and determination have paved a path to self-sufficiency for McAHA resident, Veronica Cano who began her journey with the FSS Program in 2015. Her five-year journey in the program was a period in which Cano had to meet certain goals that would assist her in becoming self-sufficient while also receiving escrow credit due to an increase in her earned income.
The FSS Program promotes self-sufficiency within both Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher programs. The program consists of goal development, case management and escrow credit to eligible head of household participants. Families in this program are required to meet their goals in a five-year term.
Cano’s main goal is to become a homeowner and that dream gets closer to reality.
“Me dio fuerza para seguir y cumplir la meta, cumplirla porque es fácil empezar, lo difícil es terminar, entonces ahorita que ya me gradué yo sé que di un gran paso…Y mi meta es tener mi propia casa, ya estoy en el proceso con Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc” (It gave me strength to continue and meet the goal, meet it because it is easy to start, the difficult thing is to finish, so right now that I graduated I know that I took a big step … And my goal is to have my own home, I am already in the process with Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc), Veronica Cano said.
Despite going through a difficult time with a global pandemic, Cano did not give up on her dream and remained strong through the completion of the program.
“Ms. Cano has embraced the program to its fullest and proves that the program works. Her accomplishment is a tribute to the McAHA staff,” McAHA Chairman Ronnie Cruz said. McAHA is proud of Cano’s accomplishments and encourages its residents to take part of the FSS Program as an opportunity that will strengthen the lives of their families.
