EDINBURG, Texas – On Friday, September 1, 2023, an important community milestone was celebrated as Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. led Edinburg’s first-ever “Walk with the Mayor” event. Originating from the city’s Central Fire Station at 212 W. McIntyre Street, around 200 enthusiastic participants joined the mayor and city council members for a stimulating walk around Edinburg City Hall. This gathering was not just a walk but a statement—a declaration of intent to encourage healthier living standards and foster community engagement.

This event was part of the 2023 Move with the Mayor™ (MWTM) campaign, an annual initiative to motivate cities nationwide to make health-conscious choices. By leading by example, Mayor Garza Jr. aims to shift the tide toward a more physically active, wellness-focused community. Through this campaign, the City of Edinburg aligns with other mayors nationwide in a concerted effort to improve heart health, minimize health risks, and inspire residents to adopt an active lifestyle.

“Move with the Mayor™ provides a unique opportunity to initiate a small but powerful change in our daily routines,” Mayor Garza Jr. said during the event. “Increasing our levels of physical activity can have a ripple effect in improving heart health, enhancing civic engagement, and uplifting the general well-being of both our residents and city employees.”

The inaugural “Walk with the Mayor” event went beyond the act of walking; it aimed to create a sense of unity, health, and camaraderie among residents. Conversations sparked along the walking route, new friendships were formed, and community members of all ages engaged in dialogue about their city’s future, highlighting the importance of civic participation.

The modern world has increasingly become sedentary, with more people working from home and reduced outdoor activities. Public health data suggests that this lack of physical activity significantly contributes to various health risks, including obesity, heart disease, and mental health challenges. Mayor Garza’s initiative directly confronts these concerns, urging citizens to become stakeholders in their health.

The September 1st walk marks the beginning of Edinburg’s journey toward a healthier community. Throughout the month of September, a host of additional events are scheduled to keep the momentum going. These events will focus on activities designed to engage different population segments, from group exercises to nutritional education seminars.

Members of the public and city employees are not only welcomed but encouraged to participate in these forthcoming events. Mayor Garza and the City Council believe that every step toward a healthier lifestyle is a step toward a stronger, more unified community.

As Edinburg takes its first steps in this journey toward community health and engagement, the initial response from the public is a promising sign that this campaign will achieve its objectives. With the support of dedicated public servants and a motivated community, Edinburg seems well on its way to becoming the light for public health and community involvement.

“Today was not just a walk,” Mayor Garza summarized, “it was a step toward a better future for Edinburg.” Indeed, this city’s future is on a path toward wellness and a vibrant community spirit.
