On Monday, September 15, 2025, McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos and Assistant City Manager Juan Olaguibel met with Tampico Mayor Mónica Villarreal to discuss future trade and investment opportunities and expand bilateral collaboration to support economic integration.
The discussion centered on highlighting McAllen’s role as a hub for international trade, commerce, and tourism. Mayor Villalobos shared McAllen’s advantages as a strategic location for business investments, including its robust retail sector, growing industrial base, business friendly environment and its position as a gateway for cross-border trade with Mexico and beyond.
“McAllen is committed to strengthening our international partnerships and expanding economic opportunities,” said Mayor Javier Villalobos. “We look forward to welcoming Tampico’s business community and working to build lasting relationships which will benefit both sides of the border.”
In November 2024, Tampico and McAllen officially became Friendship Cities, a partnership that allows the development of initiatives benefiting the signing communities.
City Manager Isaac J. Tawil also underscored the importance of the gathering. “McAllen is committed to creating an environment where foreign businesses can thrive,” said Tawil. “By connecting with Tampico’s entrepreneurs and business leaders, we are opening the door to new opportunities which will drive growth, create jobs, and reinforce McAllen’s position as a leader in regional economic development.”
Mayor Villarreal praised the initiative and emphasized the importance of fostering closer collaboration. Both leaders agreed the partnership represents a step forward in promoting mutual prosperity and solidifying McAllen and Tampico as strong partners in international commerce and trade.
