McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos officially announced his bid for re-election on December 9, 2024, seeking a second term to build on what he describes as three transformative years for the city. In a conversation marking the announcement, Villalobos reflected on his accomplishments, challenges, and vision for the future, setting the stage for a competitive campaign ahead of the May 2025 election.
Reflecting on his decision to run again, Villalobos emphasized his deep commitment to McAllen and the ongoing projects he feels compelled to see through. “It isn’t easy to walk away,” he admitted. “The city commission and I are working on many projects that have started. We have completed many projects, but there are still many in the process of being finished.”
Having served three and a half years as mayor and three years as a city commissioner, Villalobos’ leadership has been pivotal during critical moments for McAllen. His administration has been marked by resilience and adaptability in navigating the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and addressing immigration challenges.
Villalobos touted several significant accomplishments during his tenure, particularly in fiscal responsibility, public safety, and economic growth. “As we promised, we have been able to reduce property taxes for the last three years during my term. And our city has never been better financially than today,” he stated.
The city’s robust economy and commitment to quality of life were also points of pride for the mayor. “The city has grown economically, and we’re known as a safe city, a good city to live in with a good quality of life and the lowest cost of living. And we’re a mecca for small business,” Villalobos noted.
International relationships, especially with neighboring Mexico, have been a hallmark of his administration. “We have never had a relationship with different Mexican cities like we do now,” Villalobos said. “Our region is the southern United States and northern Mexico. That’s the region that has made us economically strong.”
The mayor acknowledged the difficulties faced during his first term, particularly those arising from the pandemic and immigration issues. “Certainly, we had challenges. As soon as I got in, we still had the issues of COVID-19 coupled with immigration issues. And we’re fortunate that we’re able to weather it and have done very well with the assistance of different organizations,” he explained.
Looking ahead, Villalobos expressed optimism about McAllen’s future. Among his potential second-term priorities are completing significant projects like the expansion of the Anzalduas International Bridge and the Bowie Reservoir development, a 70-acre mixed-use project that he describes as “a mix like no other area here in the Valley.”
Villalobos’ vision for his second term includes significant infrastructural and community advancements. “We hope to give our citizens a new city hall in four years. We’ll finish the expansion of Anzalduas International Bridge, and then, hopefully, we’ll keep lowering property taxes, which is very important,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of continuing feasibility studies for the Bowie Reservoir project, which he envisions as a transformative development featuring water attractions, hotels, retail, and residential spaces.
Villalobos’ optimism and vision were also reflected in his February 2024 State of the City address, where he celebrated McAllen’s progress under the theme “The Spirit of McAllen.” During the address, he underscored record-breaking increases in sales tax revenue, the city’s commitment to affordability, and recognition for community events and festivals.
“McAllen is thriving because of the spirit of its people,” Villalobos said during the address. “We are a safe, prosperous, and determined community, representing America’s past and future.”
As Villalobos looks ahead to the election, he remains focused on ensuring McAllen continues to grow as a city of opportunity, safety, and innovation. “We’re just getting started,” he affirmed. “There’s so much more we can do together.”
Villalobos’ re-election campaign aims to highlight his track record of fiscal responsibility, economic growth, and international collaboration while inspiring voters with a bold vision for McAllen’s future. The coming months will determine whether residents of McAllen will entrust him with another four years to deliver on these promises.
