WHERE: McAllen Youth Baseball Complex, 8201 N. 29th St.             Registration: 8:30 a.m. Walk: 9:00 a.m.

WHY: The City of McAllen Mayor’s Wellness Council is hosting the Mayor’s Victory Walk & ITT Challenge Kick-Off Lap, a free outdoor exercise event to both celebrate the City of McAllen’s 2018 It’s Time Texas! Challenge win and to encourage McAllen residents to move and exercise this year for their health and as part of this year’s ITT Challenge.

The walk will be held along the trail and is a little less than a mile. Participants can walk or run, or even hop, skip and jump their way through the trail as it is not a competitive event, but rather, simply a fun way to gather McAllen community and celebrate healthy living.  Three stations along the trail will invite walkers to write down their favorite places in McAllen to work out; health goals for themselves; and what they love about McAllen.  Water stations will be available and a Mayor’s Wellness Council swag bag and light refreshments will be provided while they last.

The event is free and open to the entire family, including the four-legged variety. Strollers are welcome but other wheeled transportation (skateboards, roller-blades, bicycles) are not allowed on the trail is it is made of decomposed granite.

“I am so proud of our McAllen community for what we were able to accomplish last year in the ITT Challenge,” said Mayor Darling.  “While we are trying to combat negative perceptions about our community’s health, everyone needs to get involved and make healthy lifestyle a priority. This walk is literally a good first step to do that.”

The event is being coordinated as part of the City of McAllen’s participation in the It’s Time Texas! community health challenge competition. Participants will be asked to register for the challenge if they are not signed up and all will be asked to take a Healthy Selfie, which can then be uploaded to the site.  The City of McAllen and McAllen I.S.D. receive points for activities.

Additionally, individuals can be eligible for prizes themselves throughout the competition. McAllen is currently in first place in the Large City category.  To find out how to participate as an individual or business in the challenge, visit: https://ittcommunitychallenge.com/user/register  or call the City of McAllen Health & Code Enforcement Department at (956) 681-1900
