COLLEGE STATION – Graduate student Paul May finished 40th in the shot put to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field team during the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round on Wednesday at Texas A&M’s E.B. Cushing Stadium.

May recorded a throw of 16.60 meters on his first attempt before fouling on his final two attempts. Of the original field of 48, there were 47 competitors who attempted throws in the shot put.

May next competes in the discus on Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Junior Harry Barthelemy competed in the long jump and was called for fouls on all three of his attempts.

Barthelemy next competes in the triple jump on Friday at 3:15.

UTRGV resumes action on Thursday as postbaccalaureate student Idatonye Cheetham-West competes in the long jump at 3, juniorAlexandrea Hurst competes in the shot put at 6, and freshman Tamara Woodley competes in the 400-meter dash at 7:25. The 400-meter dash will be carried live on SEC Network+.
