EDINBURG – Commissioners Court unanimously passed a resolution celebrating the 100th birthday of Sullivan City resident Maria L. Benavides, who was born August 1919, in San Isidro.

In the past century, Benavides has lived through 18 United States Presidents, starting in 1919 with the 28th President Woodrow Wilson. The resolution was sponsored by Precinct 3 Commissioner Joe M. Flores.

Benavides graduated high school in 1939. She married the love of her life Rosendo Benavides, in 1947, and worked as a nurse until 1952, when the family moved to Sullivan City and opened a small convenience store.

Benavides was joined at Commissioners Court by family members. She and her husband raised four children, Roel, Noemi, Joel, and Nydia. She has 11 grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-great-grandchildren.

“Every minute of her 100th year has been filled with laughter and the love of her family,” said Flores.
