March 24, local families and students will take part in the McAllen sister march of “March For Our Lives,” a march created to promote school safety. The march will begin at Lamar Academy (1009 N. 10th Street in McAllen), go to McAllen City Hall (1300 W. Houston Ave #220) and then return to Lamar. Students, teachers, parents, and community members will take to the streets to demand that their lives and safety become a priority and that we end gun violence and mass shootings in our schools today. On this day, the collective voices of the March For Our Lives movement will be heard.

“As I attempt to put myself in the shoes of the Parkland survivors,” said Valeria Arguelles, “I cannot begin to fathom the horrible sensation they must feel when they step foot in their school. I cannot get rid of the thought that school is a place where one should feel comfortable and cultivate a sense of self, not a place that you should fear. That is why I will march. To make it known that I will not give up until something is done to make the lives of our students a priority.”

“The issue of school safety is not a partisan problem,” said Andrea Ramirez “but rather, a countrywide concern. This concern has been met with conflict and violence in the past, but as the saying goes, we cannot fight fire with fire. A ‘March for Our Lives’ will peacefully unite our local community in McAllen with the other members of our nation against violence in our school system. Let us unite in the desire to promote safety in our schools and unite by peacefully showing not only our local government but our country that no child should fear going to school. March 24, I will march for every life ever lost at the hand of violence in the school system. I march for the survivors, the living, breathing students of our country. I march so our country will never have to deal with loss like this ever again.”

Valeria Arguelles and Andrea Ramirez are currently organizing this event.  They are juniors at Lamar Academy/IB campus in McAllen.  To learn more about the event, you can email marchforourlivescas@gmail.com or call 956-632-3222.
